By now you have probably seen the horrendous Panorama TV programme on so-called fighting dogs.
Let me assure you there is nothing wrong with these dogs except their owners. Dogs are exceptionally sociable animals (you can’t form an orderly pack without being companionable) and are always inclined to trust humans.
Unfortunately unscrupulous individuals with either a blood lust or a gambling problem often betray this trust. These sad puppies are pinched, teased, stabbed and tormented until they don’t know who to trust- attack being the best form of
defence.
Pit Bulls (now illegal) Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Akitas, German Shepherds, Staffies, etc. are all capable of being wonderful pets in the hands of a knowledgeable owner. Rough play, tug o’ wars and wrestling are NOT games to indulge in with ANY dog unless you want to encourage aggression.
These powerful breeds get a very bad reputation because of their ignorant owners. If you know what you are doing and are committed to sensible training these dogs are as affectionate as any.
So, please, don’t taint these canines with the stupidity of their handlers. Take a look at the tattooed meatheads walking around town with dogs on chains heavy enough to hog tie a hippopotamus. That’s the root cause of the problem.
